This month ASF Initiatives was launched, a new fundraising program to support mission critical initiatives for open source projects. We are excited that Alpha-Omega has seed-funded the first effort in the fundraising program – the Tooling Initiative – and hope others will join the effort. Applications for travel assistance to Community Over Code Asia are now open until May 9. Read on to learn more about these updates and more.

President’s Letter

First this month, I’d like to thank our outgoing directors, Willem Ning Jiang, Jeff Jirsa, and Craig Russell, and welcome the incoming board. We had a record number of interested candidates for this year’s election, as well as a record number of new Members elected into the foundation this month.
We also have a new VP on board, so join me in welcoming Daniel Gruno to the role of VP, Diversity and Inclusion. He has been working steadily for several weeks now on a plan to revive that project and community and is gladly welcoming contributors.
It’s great to see so much activity in ASF projects as well as interest in the future of the foundation. One of the biggest parts of that future is the launch of ASF Initiatives, beginning with ASF Tooling. We’ve hired two folks to start supporting this work, and the team has already launched a project to support Apache Trusted Releases that is ready for feedback from ASF members. We’re able to do so thanks to collaboration with the Alpha-Omega Project, and I appreciate all the work that many folks have put into both ASF Initiatives and ASF Tooling over the last few months.
Our infrastructure team is also hiring–sysadmins to be specific, and those positions are still open. If you or someone you know would be a great fit for ASF staff, preferably working on European time zones, please take a look at the job description and apply!
I mentioned it last month, but there’s so much value in our face-to-face gatherings wherever they happen, I will continue to remind you all of our events in this newsletter! If travel budget is a concern, consider volunteering through our Travel Assistance Committee (TAC). Applications are open for C/C Asia and will open soon for North America.
- Community Over Code North America will be Minneapolis, MN, September 11-14. The CFP is open through April 21.
- Community Over Code Asia will be in Beijing, July 25-27. The CFP is open through April 21.
At the North America event, we’re also adding a special new “track” at the end of the day. One of the things we’ve learned from gathering with ASF friends is that they have fascinating interests outside of their software projects, and we decided to give them an opportunity to talk about those things into a microphone! This track will happen at the end of each conference day, giving attendees a time to share their passions with one another. However, unlike the rest of the CFP, attendees will be able to vote on which talks make it to the schedule. To thank you for reading this newsletter (virtual high five!), you’re the first to get the link to submit those talks.
Sincerely,
Ruth Suehle
